A message from the Chairman

This has been our best season in the history of the club.

From an overall perspective we once again (for the second successive year) won the Heathway Champion Club Award which is awarded for total numbers of participants calculated on in both the senior and junior competitions. We also won (for the third successive year) the Peter Bowman Memorial shield which overall participation in the junior competition.

Our juniors have once again performed well both on and off the field. Our U 14’s and U 16’s did us proud by featuring in their respective Grand finals. Although both teams competed gamely they unfortunately lost on the day, but we are all so immensely proud of them anyway. I know that these results are greatly disappointing to these teams and the coaching staff, but let us not forget that it is an awesome achievement just have been there to compete in the Grand Final.

Our Colts and our Senior First XV made history on the weekend. We had never been in a Grand Final or won a trophy in the WA Senior competition. This weekend we competed in two Grand Finals, winning both!

The Colts competed exceptionally well in a very tough encounter on Saturday and were truly unlucky to draw the match. They are the joint champions of the U 19 competition for 2007 and share the trophy with Perth Bayswater. We all know that on their overall performance during the season, they are the true champions anyway and their guts and determination on Saturday proved this.

Our Senior First XV showed that they too possessed an ample amount of guts and determination to hang on against relentless pressure and stage a comeback at the death of which Lazarus would have been proud. In snatching victory from the jaws of defeat they have rounded off a magnificent season and wrestled the 3rd grade trophy from a very worthy opponent (ARKS) which, as we all know, was a First Grade club only a few short years ago!

In a few short seasons from now, imagine where we could be! I am guardedly optimistic that we now have the makings of a platform which will herald in a new phase in the history of the Joondalup Brothers Rugby Union Football Club.

Once again, my congratulations to all concerned for their magnificent achievements over the season. Let us also not forget that on field success by any team cannot be achieved without the hard work, dedication and support of each and everyone who is directly involved in some element of management, coaching and/or administration within our club – and without the passionate and unwavering support of the families and other supporters of our club who brave the conditions week in and week out to cheer our teams on, we would certainly would not achieve the success we have.

We also owe a debt of gratitude to all of our sponsors and benefactors and in particular to Harcourts GBT (Joondalup), the Whale and Ale (Clarkson) and Resi Mortgage (Joondalup) and Sea View Ford (Clarkson) who have given us substantial financial support over the past season without which we would not have been able to provide for many of the essentials and equipment to keep our teams on the field. We know that they support us largely because of their commitment to the local community and we hope that the success of our club and the exposure that this creates will eventually translate into a measure of commercial return as well.

Regards,

Kevin Russell
